Owls in Fifth Place at C-USA Golf Championship

West Point, Miss. - The Rice Owls golf teams sits in fifth place after the first round of the 2006 Conference USA Golf Championship at the the par 72, 7,000-yard course at Old Waverly Golf Club. The Owls were led by sophomore Addison Awe and freshman Kyle Kelley who each shot a 69. Awe shot a 35 on the front nine and a 34 on the back, while Kelley shot a 36 on the front and a 33 on the last nine. Both are currently tied for fifth.
"I though we played pretty good today, especially Addison Awe and Kyle Kelley," says Rice head coach Drew Scott. "We were striking the ball really well and we are certainly fighting for contention."
Memphis sophomore Keven Fortin-Simard shot a first-round 66 (-6) to help the Tigers grab a two-shot lead. SMU's Colt Knost has the Mustangs within two shots of the lead after equaling Fortin-Simard's low round of the day.
Fortin-Simard was joined in red figures by a pair of teammates as Memphis shot a 12-under, 276, while the 35th-ranked Mustangs also had a trio of players under par to post a 278. Memphis freshman Brad Benjamin is one shot back in third place after firing a five-under, 67.
Third through 10th places in the team standings are separated by only seven strokes. 42nd-ranked Houston and 24th-ranked Tulsa are tied for third, nine shots back of lead, after posting, respective scores of 285 (-3).
Rice and UAB are tied for fifth at 286 (-2). Besided Awe and Kelley, four others also shot a 69. UAB's Garrett Osborn, a first-team All-C-USA performer in 2005, and freshman Josh Thompson, Tulsa's Sam Korbe and UTEP's Trent Rommann all registered scores of 69.
UCF was the only other team to shoot even par or better, posting a 288 (E) to stand in seventh place. UTEP was in eighth with a 291 (+3), host Southern Miss is ninth with a 292 (+4), East Carolina is 10th after a 296 (+8), Marshall is 11th with a 302 (+14) and Tulane rounded out the 12-team field with a 308 (+20).
The second round begins at 8 am on Tuesday.
