AUSTIN - Rice sophomore Brittany Massengale and freshman Diane Gu both posted a pair of individual wins, and the Owls swim team claimed six of the meet's 11 events overall, but it was the eighth-ranked Texas Longhorns that slipped away with a 114-89 dual meet win between the schools Wednesday evening at the Jamail Swim Center in Austin.
Massengale notched a season-best time of 1:51.13 to win the 200-yard freestyle over 12 competitors. The standout from Alma, Ark., led a 1-2 Rice finish in the 200 as freshman Carlyann Miller won a battle for second place with a season-best time of 1:51.33. Five events later, Massengale coasted to a victory in the 500-free with a time of 4:53.13.
Massengale won the distance events and Gu took care of the sprints. The freshman from Orlando, Fla., won the 50 (23.70) and held off a Longhorn rally to win the 100-free (51.74) by eight one-hundredths of a second. With two wins secured Gu then swam the lead leg on the Owls' winning 200-free relay (1:35.85) with Miller, freshman Skylar Craig and senior Laura Healey. Gu also swam the anchor leg of the winning 400-free relay behind Miller, Massengale and Healey (3:29.43). Texas offset a solid Rice showing with 1-2 finishes in three events. The C-USA meet will be held across town at the University of Houston Recreation & Wellness Center natatorium. Rice is competing in Conference USA for the first time after nine seasons in the Western Athletic Conference.
