Rice University head golf coach Drew Scott has announced the signing of Michael Whitehead (Sugar Land, Texas) and Tim Pawul (East Setauket, N.Y./Melville H.S.), to a National Letter of Intent to attend Rice and play golf for the Owls.
Pawul's top finishes include 10th 2006 Buick Junior Open presented by Golfweek, 22nd 2006 Lessing's AJGA Classic, 26th 2006 Tee Up Junior Challenge, 7th 2005 Lessing's AJGA Classic, and 2006 US Junior Amateur participant. He is the son of Skip a nd Janet Pawul.
"Tim is going to be an outstanding addition to the Rice golf family," comments Scott. "He definitely has the ability to come in as a freshman and compete for a spot in the lineup. His biggest asset is his power and he can really move the ball. We are very excited he has chosen to join the Rice Owls next fall."
Whitehead, who was home schooled, was only one of 12 in the nation to be selected to the AJGA HP Scholastic Junior All-America Team. His top finishes include second 2006 AJGA Randy Smith Classic, fourth 2006 AJGA Valero Texas Open Junior Shootout, third 2005 Optimist International, and sixth Optimist Tournament of Champions.
"Michael has been a big fan of Rice athletics and it just seemed a perfect fit for him and for our team," says Scott. He has demonstrated that he can take his game to the highest level based on his play from the past year. His short game and putting are his strong suits."
