The Rice soccer team congratulates Owl volunteer assistant coach Craig Waibel and the hometown Houston Dynamo on winning the MLS Cup Sunday afternoon in Frisco, Texas. Waibel and the Dynamo bring the city's latest championship to the city of Houston after a thrilling shootout victory over the New England Revolution.
Waibel, who started on defense for the Dynamo in the MLS Final and played the entire game including two overtime periods, also serves as a volunteer coach for the Owls' soccer team. The 30-year old Portland, Ore., native completed his eighth year in the MLS. He began his Rice connection through his wife, Julie, who works in the Athletics Department as the assistant director of stewardship and special events.
"The team is absolutely thrilled for Craig and the Dynamo," said Rice head coach Chris Huston. "He played a great game and it's terrific to see the hard work he put in all season long rewarded with the championship. Craig's coaching is extremely beneficial and it means a lot to Rice to have him on our bench. His influence was very important, and not just that he is an MLS star pursuing a professional championship. The fact that he volunteered his time to help coach our players the whole season set an example of what it really means to appreciate the sport of soccer. He doesn't just play at an elite level, he is willing to teach the next generation of players and give them the benefit of his experience... all while asking for nothing in return. Rice soccer knew Craig was a champion long before Sunday's MLS Cup. Congratulations Craig and the Dynamo."
