HOUSTON -- For the second week in a row, Rice's Yvette Kirk was named the league's defensive player of the week and Rachel Lopez earned setter of the week honors, the Conference USA office announced Monday. The pair, both juniors, helped the Owls to a 2-1 record last week in conference volleyball action.
Kirk averaged a whopping 6.07 digs per game, an improvement of 2.03 dpg from her season average. Against Houston, she had a career best 34 digs, a total that was just two off the Rice record set in 1989 and ranks second all-time in school history. She then posted a second 30-plus dig performance with 31 against Southern Miss.
