Choudrant, La. -- The Rice Owls golf team placed 14th out of the 18-team field at the Squire Creek Intercollegiate (Squire Creek GC). The event was limited to only one round of action as Monday's first and second rounds were cancelled due to rain. In Tuesday's final round, Rice shot 303 as two freshmen saw their first collegiate action.
In his first collegiate event, freshman Chris Brown shot 38-36 for two-over 74 to lead the Rice contingent, while senior Heon Young Lee shot a 75 (39-36) and junior Jeff Krakowiak shot a 76 (36-40). Freshman Michael Buttacavoli fired a 78 (35-43), while freshman Zach Wilson shot an 81 (39-42) in his first collegiate event.
Sam Houston State captured the team title with a 281 score. South Alabama's Johnny Caldwell won the individual with a -5 67 (33-34).
Rice is next in action with a three-day event on Oct. 22-24 at the Mason Rudolph Intercollegiate in Franklin, Tenn. (hosted by Vanderbilt).
