Nashville, Tenn. -- The Rice Owls golf team sits in 10th place, but only eight shots back from first, after the first round of Vanderbilt's Mason Rudolph Intercollegiate. The Owls finished with a 298, while first-place Baylor sits at 290. Four teams are tied at 292, while three are tied for seventh at 297. Kansas' Zach Pederson was low-man on the day at the Legends Club in Franklin, Tenn. with a four-under 68 (35-33).
For Rice, Senior Parker LaBarge and sophomore Addison Awe each shot 74s and sit in 24th place. Sophomore Jeff Krakowiak and freshman Kaz Hoffman followed with a 75, while freshman Kyle Kelley shot a 77.
Rice mentor Drew Scott overall was somewhat satisfied with his team's performance on a tough golf course. "I am pleased with our performance today," comments Scott. To play just so-so and to only be eight shots back, gives me confidence that two solid rounds and we can still win this event. We did not shoot ourselves in the foot, and the team is very excited about playing well on Saturday and Sunday."
