The Rice men's golf team competes in the fifth annual Mason Rudolph Intercollegiate this Friday-Sunday, Sept. 30-Oct. 2, at the Vanderbilt Legends Club in Franklin, Tenn. The 54-hole event takes place on the par 72, 7,200-yard Ironhorse Course. Last year, Georgia State won this event with a -21, 831 total.
Along with Rice and host Vanderbilt, the 12-team field includes Baylor, Belmont, College of Charleston, Furman, Kansas, Miami (Ohio), Middle Tennessee, Ole Miss, SMU and Virginia.
This is the Owls' first action in two weeks and head coach Drew Scott took advantage of the time between competitions. "Since our last event, we've had a good two weeks of practice, even though Hurricane Rita delayed us a little bit," comments Scott. "The team should be ready to go for Friday's first round. This tournament has a strong field and it is taking place on a great golf course. Since it's a three-day event, it is a more relaxed event since there is only one round per day. Therefore we'll be able to practice in the afternoon and work on some things after each round."
Making the trip for the Owls is Addison Awe (1), Jeff Krakowiak (2), Kaz Hoffman (3), Parker LaBarge (4), and Kyle Kelley (5). These are the same five that Scott selected for the team's first competition at the Air Force Academy on Sept. 9 and 10. Says Scott, "I believe these are the most experienced five we have right now and I'm looking forward for them to continuously get better."
