Men's Golf: Owls Place Sixth at WAC Championship

Choudrant, La. -- On the final day of competition at the Wells Fargo WAC Championship, the Rice Owls golf team shot a 305 to finish in sixth place with a composite score of 914 (306-303-305, +50) at Squire Creek GC (7,105 yards, par 72). At last season's WAC Championship, the Owls placed ninth and this year's finish is the best since 2003 when Rice placed sixth as well.
With a final round 74 (+2), Frank Buttacavoli led Rice with a 16th place finish (tied) at 226 (75-77-74, +10). Freshman Addison Awe was tied for 18th at 227 (73-75-79, +11), while another freshman, Jeff Krakowiak tied for 25th at 232 (82-77-73, +16). Matt Toohey was tied for 32nd with a 234 (76-79-79, +18) and Parker LaBarge was tied for 37th at 236 (83-74-79, +20).
Tulsa (301-300-288) and SMU (309-293-287) tied for first at 889. SMU was one stroke better in the round (287) to the Golden Hurricane who had fired a 288 in the final round. This is the fifth year in a row that Tulsa has either placed first or second at the WAC Championship. Tulsa won the title in 2002 and finished second in 2001, 2003 and 2004. SMU won its first WAC golf title last year.
SMU's Will Dodson was the tournament's medalist at 214 (72-71-71, -2). Dodson was the only golfer to be under par and he finished fourth a year ago.

Tulsa forfeits playoff hole vs. SMU to catch a plane, therefore SMU is declared the 2005 WAC Champion.
