DALLAS - Conference USA's preseason player of the year Lauren Neaves earned C-USA player of the week honors after helping Rice to a 73-70 upset of then 13th-ranked Texas Tech on Monday. The honor is Neaves' first weekly recognition.
Neaves powered Rice to a 73-70 upset of then 13th-ranked Texas Tech on Monday, dropping in 27 points and grabbing a career-high 18 rebounds. The win over a top-15 team was the first for the Owls since Feb. 21, 2002 when Rice defeated then sixth-ranked Louisiana Tech, 57-56. Neaves recorded a follow-up double-double in a 59-54 win over Penn in the first round of the Husky Classic, the 21st of her career and second on the young season. The junior added 10 points and seven boards in the title game against Washington en route to collecting all-tournament recognition. Neaves averaged 18 points and 11.7 rebounds on the week, while tabbing 2.7 blocked shots per game. The Owls return to the court Friday at 7 pm, facing Davidson in the first round of the Gene Hackerman Invitational at Autry Court. Rice will face either former Western Athletic Conference rival Louisiana Tech or Texas-San Antonio on Saturday.
