Houston -
Rice used an aggressive and balanced attack to cruise past the Houston Jaguars 92-64 Friday in the final women's exhibition game of the season at Autry Court.
Lauren Neaves scored a game-high 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds, and Valeriya Berezhynska added 14 points.
"The team played an absolutely brilliant game tonight," said first-year head coach Greg Williams. "We need this kind of effort when we open the season next week at Ole Miss."
The Owls jumped out to a 10-point lead midway through the first half before the Jaguars battled back to within one with 11:14 left. From that point, Rice moved away steadily, taking a 50-32 lead into the half.
Rice continued to build the lead in the second half, as Whitney McCauley knocked down three three-pointers in four minutes to take the score to 71-44. Another trey by Krystal Frazier put the Owls up by 28 and secured the win. The Jaguars never got closer than 23 points after that as they dropped to 5-7 on the year.
Sophomore guard Kadie Riverin continued her impressive run, dishing out eight assists and scoring eight points as she grabbed three steals and four rebounds.
"Kadie was really solid out there," Williams said. "She continues to impress me with her ballhandling and ability to run the floor and drive the offense. It was a nice plus for her to take such good shots, too."
Tiffany Loggins was five of nine from the field and scored 11 points to go with four steals and four rebounds, while freshman Emery Carter scored nine points and grabbed six boards.
"This was an important game for Tiffany," Williams said. "She has played really well in practice and our scrimmages, and this time she stepped up during a game and hit some big shots. Emery was another positive despite fouling out, and we will need that kind of production from our freshmen."
Rice shot 45.2 percent from the field and outrebounded the Jaguars 56-46. The team was seven of 15 from three-point land.
The Owls open the regular season Nov. 18 at Mississippi.
