Rice University head golf coach Drew Scott has announced the signing of Michael Buttacavoli, from Miami Beach, Fla., and Zach Wilson, from Austin, Texas, to National Letter of Intent to attend Rice and play golf for the Owls.
Buttacavoli, younger brother of former Owl golfer and current medical school student Frank Buttacavoli (Rice '05), was the 2005 Southern Junior Amateur champion and AJGA honorable mention all-America. Also at the AJGA First American Title, Buttacavoli placed 10th.
"I am pleased with the additions of Michael and Zach," says the first-year Rice mentor. "They are the caliber of player that will be able to come in and compete for a starting spot in the lineup immediately. Zach has plenty of power in his game to compliment his short game. Michael has national tournament experience that will enable him to adjust to the pressures of the collegiate game."
Wilson is a standout from Stephen F. Austin H.S. in Austin. He placed 14th at the Texas-Oklahoma Junior, 15th at the AJGA Valero Texas Junior Shootout, and 17th at the AJGA Randy Smith Classic. A member of the National Honor Society, Wilson also was named a two-time academic all-district selection.
