Volleyball: Rice Sweeps UTSA, 3-0
9/8/2004 HOUSTON ? Senior Lindsey Carter had another impressive night with 24 kills to lead the Rice volleyball team to a 31-29, 30-23, 30-24 victory over Texas-San Antonio Wednesday at Autry Court.
The Owls struggled out of the gates in game one, and the Roadrunners not only took advantage, but were on the verge of taking the opening set with a 29-20 lead and the serve. Then Rice put on the brakes with a pair of Carter kills. Olaya Pazo served 10-straight points for the Owls to shut down the UTSA threat as Carter blasted five kills over Rice's final 11 points.
The Roadrunners took the advantage again in game two, leading by as many as six in the early going. Rice battled back and after trailing 21-20, surged ahead with Rebeca Pazo serving up six points to give the Owls the momentum. UTSA tried to fight back, but a pair of Carter kills closed out the set for Rice.
In game three, it was the Owls' turn to take the early lead. Despite several rallies by the Roadrunners, Rice held off UTSA behind the solid hitting of Carter and Rebeca Pazo. Carter hit .533 (8-0-15), while Pazo was .500 (7-1-12).
Carter finished the evening one off her career best in kills with 24 to lead all hitters, while Rebecca Pazo added 14. It was also the second-straight match for both Owls to record double-doubles as Carter notched 11 digs and Pazo had 10. Kristina Hoban set up 48 assists on the night and Yvette Kirk had 18 digs to lead Rice. As a team, the Owls hit .240 including a .311 in game three.
The Roadrunners were led by Meagan Daniel and Brittany Hildebrand with nine kills a piece. UTSA served up eight aces and blocked down seven Rice attacks, but was held to just .048 hitting for the match.
The win improves Rice's record to 3-1, while UTSA falls to 0-4. The two teams will meet again this weekend at the Roadrunner Invitational in San Antonio. The Owls face Iowa State and UTSA on Friday, then Drake on Saturday. |
