Volleyball: Rice Splits Matches At LSU Tournament

BATON ROUGE, La. ? The Rice volleyball team split a pair of matches on Friday in Baton Rouge, La., sweeping Central Florida 3-0, before falling to Louisiana State 3-2 at the Hurricane Frances Tournament.
All three teams were slated to play in tournaments in Florida before the approaching hurricane forced numerous cancellations.
In the first match of the day, the Owls showed a balanced attack against the Golden Knights with four players recording eight kills a piece on the way to a 30-15, 30-19, 30-25 victory. Rice was dominant in the first game, hitting .333 (12-1-33) as a team while holding UCF to -.170 (9-17-47). Tessa Kuykendall led the Owls with four of the team's six blocks in the opening set.
Kuykendall finished with eight blocks in the match, including three solo, as Rice recorded 12 overall. The Owls finished hitting .226 (40-14-115). Kristina Hoban recorded her first double-double of the year with team highs of 28 assists and 15 digs. Rice held UCF to -.065 (33-42-139).
Despite Lindsey Carter matching her career best of 25 kills, the Owls came up just short against the host Tigers, 30-25, 25-30, 36-34, 17-30, 15-9. Carter, Hoban and Rebeca Pazo all recorded double-doubles in the match, with Carter adding 13 digs, while Hoban had 54 assists and 13 digs and Pazo recorded 15 kills and 11 digs. Olaya Pazo led the Owls with 22 digs and Yvette Kirk was right behind her with 20. Meanwhile, Kuykendall chalked up another eight blocks.
With the day's results, Rice improves to 2-1 on the year. Next up for the Owls is a home match against Texas-San Antonio on Wednesday at 7 pm. |
