Men's Golf: The 19th HOLE with Scott Philips
2/13/2004
This week's 19th HOLE features senior team captain, Scott Philips. Scott, from Corpus Christi, currently leads the Owls with a 74.86 average.
Overall:
I don?t put anything in the bag that I don?t love. It has to look and feel right.
Driver:
Taylor Made 360 9.5 degree w/ Grafalloy Prolite 35-X. It isn?t the longest driver out, but I can control it better than others I have tried, and I?d rather have that. When I find the right head/shaft combo of the new Taylor Made 5 Series, it will be in the bag.
Irons:
Mizuno MP-33 w/ S300s. Standard clubs that are terrific. Great look and extremely soft feel.
Putter:
Anser 4I Belly-putter. With a short putter, I am a nominee for the worst putter in the world. Use what works.
Wedges:
53 degree Cobra Trusty Rusty and 60 degree Vokey mild steel. I wish they still made the Trusty Rusty series. Mine is worn out, but I haven?t found another that I like as much. So it?s still in the bag.
Ball:
Pro V1. Easily the best ball on the market.

Top 5 golf courses I?ve played:
Del Mar Country Club (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.), Greystone (Birmingham), North Shore CC (Chicago), Upper Cascades (Homestead), and Torrey Pines (La Jolla, Calif.)
Top 5 golf courses in Houston-area:
BlackHorse, Lochinvar, River Oaks, Houston CC, Meadowbrook Farms
Favorite major golf tournament:
The Masters. I can remember watching this tournament when I was a little kid. When they start playing the theme song, it brings back so many great memories. To me there isn?t a more special day in golf than Masters Sunday.
The best golf story I have experienced is this:
I was playing a tournament in Victoria. It was my birthday, and my mom and dad were there. I was trailing by a bunch after the first round, and came to the back nine just a few back. I shot 33 on the back nine and won the tournament. Then we went out and celebrated my birthday. There isn?t a more satisfying feeling than finishing well. And to finish well under the pressure and win was awesome.
Favorite pro golfer:
I don?t really have one. There are a couple of guys I keep up with, but I don?t have a favorite.
Favorite Caddy Shack quote:
?Hey baby, you?re alright...you must have been somethin' before electricity.?
Three people I would choose to be in my foursome to play a round of golf would be:
The course would have to be Pebble Beach. I would play with my sister, Stacy, Jesus, and Robin Williams. I think it would be a blast!
Longest putt I ever made:
I?d be lying if I said I knew. If you have ever seen me putt, you know the answer isn?t very far anyway.
Best golf advice (tip) I?ve received:
I have received two tips that were equally great.
(1)Focus on the process rather than the result. Focusing on the process and making sure you do that well, will heed better results. (2)Believe you are a winner and you will be. It works!
Most embarrassing golf moment:
I was playing in a high school tournament. I missed my third green in a row and was so mad that I broke the 8 iron over my knee in front of a bunch of people. Then I was really pissed that I broke the club. You look like an idiot standing there with part of your club in each hand.
