Swimming: Owls Finish Sixth At SMU Classic

DALLAS -- True freshman Brittany Massengale placed second in the 500-yard freestyle with an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 4:51.21 while the Rice swim team finished Saturday's final day of competition at the SMU Classic in sixth place overall.

Rice closed out the six-team, two-day meet with 199 points. The Owls trailed meet-champion and host SMU (346 points), Washington (282.5 points), South Carolina (274), Indiana (267) and the University of British Columbia (207.5) in the final team standings.

Massengale's time provisionally qualified her for the NCAA Championships in March. Before she had taken her first class at Rice in the fall, the standout from Alma, Arkansas, qualified for the U.S. Olympic trials in the 400-meter freestyle as a high school senior.

The Rice swim team will next be in action hosting its home-opening meet of the year, the Hilton Plaza-TYR Invitational on Oct. 29-30 at the Rice Pool.
