Men's Golf: Rice Finishes Seventh at WAC Championships

Senior Drew Conrad and junior Chris Connolly each had their their best round of the tournament on the final day. Conrad fired in a 72 for the Owls' top single-round score and finished tied for 27th in the with a three-day total of 229. Connolly had a 74 on Wednesday to finish 26th in the standings, and tops for Rice, a stroke ahead of his teammate with a 228. Tulsa's Martin Maritz rallied in the final day of competition with a 68, and a three-round total of 208, eight under par, to grab the individual crown. Todd Rose of Fresno State was two strokes back with a 210 to finish second.
The Bulldogs claimed the team title with a three-day total of 856. SMU was 14 strokes back with an 870 to finish second, followed closely by TCU's 871. The Owls shot a 303 on Wednesday to bring their total to 909, tying them for seventh.
The WAC championships wrapped up the 1999-2000 season for the Rice golfers and marked the final appearance of Conrad and classmate C.W. Mallon in the Blue and Gray.
