Men's Golf: Owls Ninth After Two Rounds

MONTGOMERY, Texas Rice senior C.W. Mallon and junior Chris Connolly are tied at 18th to lead the Owls to ninth after two rounds at the Sam Houston State Bearkat Classic at the Bentwater Country Club.
Mallon shot a 72 in the first round then had a 73 in the second. Connolly fired a 71 to open the tournament then followed with a round of 74. The day one total of 145 for both Owls is eight strokes behind Alabama-Birmingham's Chris Devlin, who leads the field with a 137.
Texas Tech leads in the team standings with a two-round total of 574, just three strokes ahead of Baylor and Texas-San Antonio and four in front of UAB. Only the top four scores were counted. Rice is 16 strokes back with a two-round total of 590 on the 6,992-yard, par 72 course.
The Owls wrap up the tournament Tuesday. It is their final tune-up before the Western Athletic Conference Championships May 1-3.
