Men's Tennis: Rice Falls Victim to Number 18 Miami

The Owls opened the day strong, sweeping the doubles competition. Robert Collins and Prakash Venkataraman joined forces for the 8-5 win at number one doubles, topping Miami's Tomas Smid and Peter Hoffman. Matthias Mathaes and Kevin Hargrove teamed for the win at number two doubles, topping Michael Lang and Jose Lieberman 8-6. Completing the shutout, Rice's number three doubles duo, Alexis Pourchet and Cody Jackson, stopped Mark Arrowsmith and Joel Berman 8-5.
Mathaes continued the trend, netting Smid 6-0, 6-4 for the win at number one singles. The Owls' last point of the day came from Venkataraman at number four single, as he claimed the 6-1, 6-0 win over Michael Lang. The Hurricanes went on to take the final four points with wins at number two, three, five and six singles.
Miami improved to 11-1 on the season as Rice dropped to 9-6. The Owls will host Iowa, West Virginia and Columbia this weekend in the Rice Invitational at the Jake Hess Tennis Stadium.
