Sean Carter joined the Rice University Sports Medicine Department in May 2023. He currently serves as the Senior Assistant Athletic Trainer with the Rice Football Team.
Carter comes to Rice after serving the past four seasons as Associate Athletic Trainer and Head Football Athletic Trainer at William & Mary in Williamsburg, VA. He was responsible for managing the healthcare of football student athletes for W&M which competes in the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision. Carter was a part of the Sports Medicine team that helped W&M win the 2022 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Championship and the 5th overall seed in the NCAA FCS Playoffs.
Sean is a graduate of the University of Michigan where he earned his degree in Athletic Training in 2015. He received his Master’s Degree in Kinesiology from Louisiana State University in 2017 where he worked primarily with the Swim & Dive Teams and Tennis. Carter then spent two years as a Seasonal Intern Athletic Trainer with the Arizona Cardinals of the National Football League.
During his athletic training career, Carter has emphasized the use of manual therapy and functional rehabilitation techniques into the healthcare plans for student athletes and professional athletes. Sean is a Board of Certification certified Athletic Trainer and is also a member of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association and National Strength and Conditioning Association. Carter holds additional certifications in Strength and Conditioning (NSCA-CSCS), Dry Needling, and Graston Technique.
A native of Grand Rapids, MI, Sean currently resides in Houston with his wife Casey and two dogs, Spud and Bean.
