Nick Schrage

Nick Schrage joined the Rice football program in the spring of 2026 and serves as the Assistant Special Teams.
In the summer of 2026, Schrage was selected to participate in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ National Coaching Academy, where he assisted with Running Backs and Special Teams. During OTA practices and Rookie Minicamp, he worked under Running Backs Coach Skip Peete and Special Teams Coordinator Danny Smith.
Schrage came to South Main after one season at William and Mary as the Defensive/Special Teams Quality Control coach. In his one season with the Tribe Special Teams, he mentored Punter Carter Boyd, who earned FCS Freshman All-America honors from Phil Steele, and was named third team All-CAA, and Stephon Hicks was named first team 1st-Team All-CAA after blocking four punts to lead the nation.
On defense, he helped develop DL Justin Krueger (2025 3rd-Team All-CAA, FCS Football Central/Phil Steele FCS Freshman All-American) & DL Brady Echols (Phil Steele FCS Freshman All-American). In 2025, Schrage was also a Finalist for the Armed Forces Merit Award, presented by the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA). The Merit Award is presented annually to honor an individual and/or group with a military background that has an impact within the realm of college football.
Before arriving in Williamsburg, Schrage coached at Gainesville High School (VA), where he worked as the Special Teams Coordinator and Tight Ends Coach from 2023–2025. During his tenure, Gainesville posted a 16-6 overall record and produced the #1 rated special teams unit in the state of Virginia. The program also saw 18 players sign to play college football across all levels, from Division III to FBS.
A former standout specialist at Army West Point, Schrage was a three-year starting kicker and punter under head coach Jeff Monken and Special Teams coordinator Sean Saturnio from 2015–2018. He helped lead the Black Knights to a 29-10 record and three consecutive bowl victories — defeating North Texas (2016 Heart of Dallas Bowl), San Diego State, and Houston (2017, 2018 Armed Forces Bowls). Schrage earned All-Independent honors, was a Ray Guy Award nominee, and finished his career ranked fourth in Academy history in punt average. He was also part of three Secretary’s Trophy-winning teams, twice earned the Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy, and helped Army finish the 2018 season ranked No. 19 nationally in the final AP Poll — the program’s highest ranking in over two decades.
Schrage graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point with a Bachelor of Science in Law and Legal Studies in 2019. He went on to serve nearly a decade in the U.S. Army, reaching the rank of Captain. His assignments included a 9-month rotation to the Republic of Korea and a 6-month deployment to Eastern Europe in support of Operation Raider Resolve with the 10th Brigade Engineer Battalion, 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 3rd U.S. Infantry Division, where he held roles ranging from Battalion Adjutant to Platoon Leader. He concluded his service as the Regimental Engineer for the 3d U.S. Infantry Regiment, “The Old Guard,” at Joint Base Myer–Henderson Hall in Arlington, VA, where he oversaw over $170 million in civil engineering projects.
A native of Miami, Florida, Schrage is also a proud graduate of Fork Union Military Academy.
