2022 Silver Waves Media's Most Impactful Mid-Major Assistant Coaches
Nick Grant enters his fifth season with the Owls in 2023-24, after initially joining the Owls as part of Coach Edmonds' initial staff for the 2021-22 season.
The 2024-25 season saw the Owls advancing to the AAC Championship game in back-to-back seasons, upsetting the overall top seed and regular season champion UTSA in the quarterfinals. Grant's positional group garnered several conference accolades, with Malia Fisher being named All-AAC First, Defensive and Tournament Team, while Aniah Alexis was named to the All-Freshman Team.
Rice capped off a historic season in 2023-24, claiming Rice Athletic's first-ever AAC title in the debut season in the conference. The Owls won four games in four days to earn Rice's fourth-ever trip to the NCAA Tournament and first since 2019, where the Owls fell to then-defending national champions LSU in a hard-fought 70-60 defeat.
Grant helped develop Owl star Malia Fisher, earning All-AAC Third Team honors. Fisher was later named AAC Tournament MVP, while Destiny Jackson and Sussy Ngulefac were also named to the All-Tournament Team. During the NCAA Tournament game against LSU, Fisher surpassed 1,000 career points, becoming the 26th athlete in program history to do so.
The 2022-23 season saw a historic start for the Owls with an undefeated non-conference slate at 9-0. Grant helped the Owls achieve the third-highest win total for a season at 23 and also was crucial for the Owls' postseason win at BYU in the WNIT First Round. Rice finished the season 23-9 and made the C-USA quarterfinals. Malia Fisher and Ashlee Austin both earned selections to the All-C-USA Second Team.
Following the 2022-23 season, Grant and Lakevia Boykin were both named to the Silver Waves Media Top 75 Impactful Mid-Major Women's Basketball Assistant Coaches list.
In his first season on South Main, Grant helped guide a young team that improved vastly as the season progressed by winning nine of their final 15 games, as well as an 8-4 mark in Conference USA in the team's final 12 league games. The Owls went 14-13 overall and advanced to the quarterfinals of the Conference USA Championship.
Rice had three players honored by C-USA for postseason accolades. Malia Fisher was named to the C-USA All-Freshman Team and earned All-Conference Honorable Mention honors (the only freshman to do so), while Ashlee Austin was named Second Team All-Conference. In addition, Destiny Jackson earned All-Conference Honorable Mention accolades.
