
Portello Sets Record as Rice Opens Phill Hansel Invitational in Second

HOUSTON — Rice opened the Phill Hansel Invitational in record-setting fashion Wednesday and sits in second place with 332.5 points.
Ava Portello highlighted the day for the Owls by setting a program record in the 500-yard freestyle, winning the event in 4:41.79. Ella Dyson added a third-place finish in the 500 free with a time of 4:48.03.
Rice started the meet with a fourth-place showing in the 200 freestyle relay, as Lily Archibald, Avery Karacz, Bella Zhang and Reese Cole posted a time of 1:31.26.
The Owls later took fourth in the 400 medley relay, with Ava Hamblett, Cole, Archibald and Karacz finishing in 3:38.26. Cole also placed fifth in the 200 individual medley in 1:59.73.
In the diving portion of the meet, Antonina Harned earned third in the 1-meter event with a score of 278.90.
"We had a good morning and an even better night," head coach Seth Huston said. "The team stepped up tonight and created some great momentum through the session."
