Offensive Struggles Doom Rice against Temple

HOUSTON — Rice was held to just 25.9% from the floor, falling 65-43 to Temple, Wednesday night from Tudor Fieldhouse.
The Story
Rice struggled out of the gate. With Temple holding an 8-3 lead, Rice scored five straight as Travis Evee tied it with a layup. However, it missed six straight baskets with Temple scoring eight of nine points to take a 16-9 lead with 7:15 to play in the half. Noah Shelby hit a three-pointer to send Rice on an 8-3 run and pull within 19-17 with 3:30 remaining. But Temple closed on a 9-2 run as Rice missed four of its final five shots to head into halftime trailing, 28-19.
Temple opened the second half on a 12-2 run through the first four minutes. Rice's struggled continued in the second half, making just two of its first 12 shots midway through the half. With Temple holding a 55-29 lead, Max Fiedler made back-to-back layups to send Rice on a 12-0 run, capped by a Fiedler three-point play. However, two straight threes by Temple began a 10-0 run that sealed the victory.

Rice was held to just 25.9% (14-of-54) from the field, and 6.7% (1-of-15) from three. Temple connected on 48.0% (24-of-50) from the floor and 43.5% (10-of-23) from three. Rice outrebounded TU, 39-to-31.

• Rice and Temple met for the second time this year and just the fifth time overall, with Temple holding a 4-1 lead.
• F Max Fiedler led Rice with 12 points and nine rebounds.
