Owls Earn Third Straight Sweep; Defeat UTEP, 3-0

HOUSTON, Texas – The No. 21 Rice Owls volleyball earned its third straight sweep, 3-0 (25-21, 25-14, 25-16), over UTEP, Sunday afternoon at Tudor Fieldhouse.
Rice (20-2, 10-0) picked up its 11th sweep of the year and held the Miners to .174 hitting, the 17th time it held its opponents under .200, while the Owls hit .316, led by fifth-year senior Anota Adekunle, who hit .520 on 15-for-25 kills. Junior Danyle Courtley was 9-of-18 and hit .333.
Fifth year setter Carly Graham led all players with 31 assists, and junior libero Nia McCardell added 14 digs.

"We came out today with a clear focus of what we wanted to execute and we did just that. How we play at this point in the season is extremely important because we want to peak at the right time. I'm proud of our execution today against a solid UTEP team."
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Set
Rice and UTEP played a tightly contested set that saw 11 ties and eight lead changes. With the score tied at nine, Rice scored five of the next seven points to take a 14-11 lead. But UTEP went on a 6-2 run to take a 17-16 lead. After trading points, Rice scored six straight to take a 23-18 lead. UTEP cut the lead to three, but Adunkle closed it out with her seventh kill to win, 25-21. Adekunle led the Owls with a .538 hitting percentage behind eight kills.
Second Set
Rice jumped out to a 5-2 lead. With the Owls leading 13-3, they went on a 6-0 run to move ahead, 19-10. UTEP cut it to the lead to 22-14 before Rice closed the match with three straight points to win 25-14. Ellie Bichelmeyer (.600), Courtley (.400), and Sahara Maruska (.400) all had three kills for the Owls.
Third Set
The offensive dominance continued in the third set as Rice got off to an 8-3 lead. After a UTEP point, Rice scored four straight. The Miners cut the lead to six, but a 6-0 Rice run extended its lead to 20-7. UTEP was able to pull within eight points, but Adekunle ended the match with her 15th kill. She led all players with five kills (.571), and Courtley added four (.500).
