Wiomen's Swimming Athlete of the Week
Zoe Spitz was named The American Athletic Conference Women's Swimming Athlete of the Week for her recent performances at the Rice Fall Splash.
Rice is an affiliate member of The American this season in swimming in advance of joining the conference in all sports in July 2023 and Spitz is the first Owl to earn an award from the conference. Swimming awards are presented when at least 50% of the members have competed since the last honors were announced. These awards recognize performances from the past two weeks of competition.
Spitz just missed the school record while dropping her own personal best in the 200 backstroke by .75 seconds at the 2022 Fall Splash at the Rice Competition Pool on October 14. She touched the wall in 1:56.76, falling .15 shy of Ellery Parish's school record of 1:56.61 set in 2019. Her time was the second-fastest 200 back in school history and currently ranks first in the conference and 19th in the nation.
Spitz added a win in the 100 back in 54.49 (second best in The American) and swam legs on three winning relays as Rice scored 391 points to outdistance Houston (308) and Incarnate Word (115) in the Owls' inaugural competition of the year.
The Owls return to competition on Friday, November 4 when they host conference foe Tulane at 4 p.m. for Senior Day.
