Owls to play 12 regular season home matches
HOUSTON – Following a spring slate in which they were nationally ranked and captured a Conference USA West division title, the Rice Owls volleyball team released a highly competitive 2021 Fall schedule on Friday (July 23) that includes four non-conference showdowns against teams who reached at least the Sweet 16 of last season's NCAA Tournament.
After a home exhibition match against Lamar on Aug. 20, the Owls will open the regular season with a two-match tournament in Columbia, SC, starting with a University of Pittsburgh team on Aug. 27 that went 19-5 in the spring advanced all the way to the Elite 8. Rice will then face host South Carolina on Aug. 28.
The Owls make their Tudor Fieldhouse debut with the first of two tournaments starting on Sept. 2 when they face last season's Sweet-16 participant Oregon (15-5) before hosting in-state rival SMU on Sept. 4.
Following a mid-week home match against Houston Baptist on Sept. 7, the Owls will welcome in LSU (Sept. 10) and Sam Houston (Sept. 12) for the second of two home tournaments.
Rice then travels to Waco for the Baylor Classic, starting with a Sept. 16 showdown against a Baylor team that the Owls pushed to five sets last season en route to the Bears' (20-7) Sweet 16 campaign. The Owls finish the tournament on Sept. 17 against McNeese in the non-conference road finale.
Then on Sept. 22 Rice will once again host a Texas Longhorns team that the Owls have beaten in five thrilling sets in each of the last two seasons. The Longhorns (27-2) were the national runners-up in the spring, losing to Kentucky in the NCAA Championship in four sets.
The Owls will once again face six teams in Conference USA play and mirror the spring format by playing the same team on consecutive days. Within league play the Owls will host UTEP (Oct. 2-3), Southern Miss (Oct. 22-23), and UTSA (Nov. 5-6) while traveling to North Texas (Sept. 25-26), Louisiana Tech (Oct. 15-16), and UAB (Oct. 29-30).
This year's C-USA Championship will be held in Norfolk, Va. (hosted by Old Dominion) and run Nov. 19-21.
