Rice in third after first day of action
In Brief: Rice stands in third place with 317 points after the first day of competition at the Phill Hansel Invitational at the University of Houston's Recreation & Wellness Center Natatorium on Thursday. Lauren McDougall posted top 12 finishes in pair of individual events in addition to swimming on both the Owls relays which finished fourth to highlight the efforts for Rice.
The Details: Rice opened the competition with McDougall, Marta Cano-Minarro, Madison Howe, and Becca Evans posting a 1:32.36 clocking in the 200 freestyle relay to finish fourth. McDougal's leadoff 50 freestyle leg (23.24) was her best effort of the day over that distance. She came back to finish 12th in the 500 freestyle, one of five Owls to finish in the top 15 in the event. She added an 11th place finish in the 50 freestyle and closed her night with a dramatic anchor leg on the Owls' 400 medley relay.McDougal hit the water trailing Houston by .64 seconds at the start of the final leg but closed the gap to just .09 at the wall. Zoe Spitz, Sini Koivu, Howe, and McDougall finished in 3:42.41
Cano-Minarro posted the Owls top individual finish with a fourth-place effort in the 200 IM in 2:01.54 in addition to placing16th in the 50 free and her leg on the freestyle relay. She was joined in individual A finals by Howe, who finished eighth in the 50 freestyle, and by the tandem of Shannon Campbell and Amelia Kane who finished seventh and eighth in the 500 freestyle.

Up Next: Action resumes at 10 a.m. on Friday with preliminaries in the 400 IM, 100 Butterfly, 200 Freestyle, 100 Breaststroke, and 100 Backstroke. Finals for those events in addition to the 200 Medley and 800 Freestyle Relays will begin a 6 p.m. There is no admission charge to attend the competition.
