Rice Memories: Bishop Mency

The college experience will forever be a source of memorable moments for an alumnus. This is especially true for a university such as Rice; an institution recognized throughout the world for its excellence. Over the duration of my four years, I was fortunate enough to create not only memories, but also relationships that will last a lifetime.
Being a part of the Men's Basketball team at Rice has been the highlight of my athletic career. Our group was tight-knit, and we showed that every time we stepped onto a court with one another. One of my most memorable experiences comes from a home stretch during conference play my first year. Fighting for a spot in the Conference USA Tournament, we took down Middle Tennessee and UAB in back-to-back double-overtime games. I remember how hard we fought to grind out those wins, but what stood out to me the most was how we all leaned on one another and how much closer we became in the face of adversity.
As a student-athlete we were expected to attend summer school to insure we were on pace to graduate. Although I would have loved to spend my summer days back home in Southern California by the beach, the summers spent at Rice hold some of my fondest memories. It was during the summer that I was enrolled in my favorite class, Sales and Revenue taught by professor Tom Stallings. Professor Stallings, an expert in his field, made the course come to life with his enthusiasm for sales, which was contagious. This validated my decision to make sports management my major, and solidified my pursuit in sales as my career.
I will forever be grateful to Rice for the lasting memories and relationships I was able to make during my college years. The competitive culture that is present in athletics as well as academics at Rice have helped propel me in the business world, as I am currently working at Monster Energy Company as an area sales manager for the greater Los Angeles territory.
