HOUSTON – For the first time in program history, the Rice Owls volleyball team is ranked in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division I Top-25 Coaches Poll, the organization announced on Monday.
After improving to 11-1 this past week, highlighted by a victory over No. 3 Texas, the Owls checked in at No. 22 in the AVCA Poll.
"This is something we've been working towards for a while now," Rice head coach Genny Volpe said. "We have performed well and have taken advantage of the opportunity to play some quality non-conference matches. We are definitely looking to continue to build on this and use it as a stepping stone rather than an end point. There is a lot of season still to play, but this definitely reflects the talent, hard work and dedication of this team."
Prior to this ballot, the Owls received votes in the poll for four consecutive weeks.
Earlier on Monday, Rice's Nicole Lennon became just the third player in league history to win a four consecutive Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week following her stellar play last week.
The Owls will put the nation's fourth-longest active home win streak (15) on the line this Friday when they open up C-USA play against UTEP (7-6) at 6 p.m. Fans can purchase tickets online at www.RiceOwls.com.
