Swimmers Second After Day 1 At C-USA Meet

ATLANTA - The Rice swim team is in second place after the first day of action at the annual Conference USA Championships held Wednesday night in Atlanta, Ga.
After the meet's only two events held Wednesday, the Owl swimmers are second in the six team C-USA field with 68 points. Florida International leads with 80 points. Marshall is third with 64 points and North Texas is fourth (60 points). Old Dominion and Florida Atlantic are tied for fifth with 54 points.
The Rice foursome of Kaitlyn Swinney, Marie-Claire Schillinger, Brittany Bui and Lauren Rhodes placed second in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:39.56. The mark was the team's best of the year and the fourth-fastest time in school history.
The Owl team of Alicia Caldwell, Ellery Parish, Hanna Huston and Lindsay Mathys also registered its best time of the season, and the fourth-best in school history, to take second in the 800-free relay with a 7:12.73. On her opening 200 leg of the event, Caldwell swam a collegiate-best 1:47.15 that is the third-fastest individual time in program history.
The C-USA Championships continue in Atlanta through Saturday with two sessions each day. Preliminaries races are at 9:30 am and event finals begin at 5 pm (Central Time).
