Owls Second After Opening Day of C-USA Swim Meet

ATLANTA - The Rice swim team is in second place after the first day of action at the annual Conference USA Championships held Wednesday night in Atlanta, Ga.
After the meet's only two events held Wednesday, the Owl swimmers are second in the six team C-USA field with 68 points. Florida International leads with 80 points. Marshall is third with 64 points and North Texas is fourth (60 points). Old Dominion holds fifth (56 points) while Florida Atlantic is sixth (26).
The Rice foursome of Alicia Caldwell, Marie-Claire Schillinger, Kiley Beall and Kate Nezelek placed second in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:38.74. The Owls led the race at the halfway point, but FIU rallied to win the event in a close finish (1:38.18). Rice's time was the second-fastest in school history.
The Blue & Gray also swam its best mark of the year to take second in the 800-free relay with a 7:14.86. FIU won the race at 7:09.02 to automatically qualify for the next month's NCAA Championships.
The C-USA Championships continue in Atlanta through Saturday with two sessions each day. Preliminaries races are at 9:30 am and event finals begin at 5 pm (Central Time).
