COLUMBIA, Mo. – Rice junior outside hitter Shelby Livingstone established a career high with 14 kills but the Owls volleyball team was unable to slow down the Utah Utes on the offensive end in a 3-0 loss (25-21, 25-17, 25-18) Friday afternoon in the opener of the Tiger Invitational.
Utah (3-1) led all but the first point of the opening set by outhitting Rice (2-3) .376 to .221. The Owls entered play Friday leading the nation in total blocks but were only able to register two against the Utes, who had just 9 attack errors on 109 attempts.
Livingstone, from Malibu, Calif., tied Utah's Carly Trueman with a match-high 14 kills on 23 attacks (.609) and no errors. Rice junior setter Madison McDaniel just missed out on a potential fourth double-double of the season with 31 assists and 9 digs.
Senior Chelsey Harris added another 8 kills to pull to within 15 kills of 1,000 for her career.
Rice will look to bounce back on Saturday when they play a pair of matches, beginning with Illinois State at 10 a.m. The Owls will then play host Missouri in the nightcap at 6:30 p.m., which will be streamed on the SEC Network+ and can be seen via the WatchESPN app.
