Rhodes Wins 50 Freestyle Friday at UH

Rice junior newcomer Lauren Rhodes won the 50-yard freestyle from among a starting field of more than 95 competitors, and then anchored the team's winning 400-medley relay to lead the Owl swimmers on the opening day of the Phill Hansel Invitational Friday night across town at the University of Houston Rec Center Natatorium.

Rhodes was sound and solid winning the the 50-free with a career-best time of 23.08. The transfer from North Carolina State then helped rally Rice to a win in the 400-medley relay, swimming the anchor leg that touched-in first place with a season-best time of 3:41.26.
After the first day of action Rice is in second place among an 11-team field with 347 points. Meet host Houston leads the team scoring with 393.5 points. The Invitational continues at UH through Sunday evening.
