
Roadrunners Defeat Owls in Four Sets

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Despite double-doubles from Madison McDaniel and Leah Mikesky, the Rice Owls volleyball team was unable to find a rhythm offensively in a four set (25-27, 25-21, 19-25, 18-25) loss to the UTSA Roadrunners Wednesday evening at the Convocation Center.
The Owls (18-9, 8-5) fell to 4-6 on the road by being outhit .259-.213 by the Roadrunners and committing 21 attack errors. McDaniel, the reigning AVCA National Player of the Week, posted 42 assists (10.5 aps) and collected 13 digs for her team-leading 16th double-double in the loss. Mikesky notched her 15th double-double of the year with a team-leading 18 kills along with 13 digs.
UTSA (19-7, 10-2) swept the season-series from the Owls behind a match-high 27 kills (.364) from Dajana Boskovic while Megan Slan chipped in 13 kills (.476).
Rice had an opportunity to grab a 1-0 match lead but UTSA was able to erase a 24-20 deficit with five unanswered points before winning 27-25. The Owls were able to respond in set two, jumping out to a 7-3 lead that forced UTSA to call timeout. Rice never looked back and hit a match-high .271 for the set. Mikesky had 10 kills in the frame alone en route to a 25-21 match-tying victory.
Out of the break UTSA broke a 14-14 tie by outscoring the Owls 11-5 the rest of the set for a 25-19 victory. The Roadrunners hit a match-high .333 for the set while the Owls were held to a .222 clip. Rice hit a match-low .119 in the fourth and final and never got closer than a 20-17 deficit down the stretch.
The Owls will now have three days off before facing Marshall in Huntington, WV Sunday at 12 p.m. (CT).
