Owls Win Three Events On Opening Day At Quad Meet

BATON ROUGE, La. - Owl newcomer Alicia Caldwell won two events in her first collegiate meet and senior Rachel Moody won another to pace the Rice swim team on the opening day of the annual Quad Meet Friday evening in Baton Rouge, La.
At the midway point of the two-day, 17-event, multi-team meet Rice leads Tulane in the team scoring 128-65 and the University of Houston 134-61. The Owls trail meet host LSU 134-65.
It was a sensational collegiate debut for the newest Owl. Freshman Alicia Caldwell, a native of Australia, enrolled at Rice at the semester break and joined the swim team. She won both of her first two individual events, taking the 200-yard freestyle with a 1:49.26 that is one of the top six times in Conference USA this season. She then won the 50-free with a 23.21 that is one league's top three fastest marks all year.
Moody won the 200-breaststroke with time of 2:15.70 that was just off her best mark of the season. The Owl foursome of Moody, Caldwell, Casey Clark and Cora McKenzie teamed for a second place in the 200-medley relay with a season-best 1:40.69. Rice was also second in the 400-free relay (3:26.75).
Rice's individual second place finishes were Anniina Ala-Seppala in the 1,000-free (10:07.51) and Casey Clark in the 100-butterfly (54.00). Carly Pratt was third among a field of 21 entries in the 100-backstroke (56.70), while Cora McKenzie was third in the 200-free (1:52.09) and Hannah Deters was third in the 200-individual medley (2:06.57).
The meet concludes with eight more events on Saturday. Start time a the LSU Natatorium is slated for 11 am.
