After the meet's only two events held Wednesday, the Owl swimmers lead the nine team field with 96 points. East Carolina and Western Kentucky are both tied for second with 80 points. North Texas and Florida International are both fourth with 74, followed by Tulane and Old Dominion (both 66 points), Florida Atlantic (64) and Marshall (56).
Two Rice squads blazed to victories in both the 200-medley and 800-freestyle relays. The team of Shelly Patton, Rachel Moody, Casey Clark and Cora McKenzie posted a new school best 1:39.33 in the 200-medley to edge East Carolina by less than three-tenths of a second. The Pirates had the lead at the midway point of the race, but Clark's strong 23.44 on the butterfly leg lifted Rice back in front where McKenzie's final 50-free held-off an ECU charge.
The Owls were the meet's No. 1 seed in the 800-free and battled for a win with a 7:12.29 that is the second-fastest mark in school history. The foursome of Clark, Taylor Armstrong, Erin Flanigan and Karina Wlostowska successfully answered a determined challenge by FIU. Heading into the final leg the difference in the race was a narrow five one-hundredths-of-second (.05) where Wlostowska pulled away.
Rice head coach Seth Huston liked what he saw from the Owls Wednesday. Two wins on Day 1 is the program's best start to a conference meet.
"Great medley relay," coach Huston said. "Shelly got us out great in the backstroke, and it was a fabulous split by Casey. It was the way we wanted to start the meet, a three-second drop from our previous season-best time.
"The 800 was close, start to finish," Huston explained. "Our girls swam smart legs of the relay and Karina did exactly what we have been working on. She poured on the speed on the third-50 and separated herself from the field, creating a cushion for the win."
