
Owls Strike Gold With Sweep of 49ers

HOUSTON, Texas - The Rice Owls volleyball team put an exclamation point on a perfect 3-0 week by sweeping the Charlotte 49ers on Dig Pink day Sunday afternoon at Tudor Fieldhouse, 25-13, 25-11, 25-21.
Rice (14-5, 4-1) was spectacular on the offensive end, hitting a season-high .436 for the match while limiting Charlotte (12-9, 1-3) to just a .101 attack percentage. Senior middle blocker Jillian Humphrey led the Owls with a match-high 13 kills (.579), followed by double-digit kills from Andi Bawcum (12) and Leah Mikesky (11).
Sophomore setter Sara Blasier totaled 39 assists (13 per set) and Daniela Arenas led all players with 20 digs.
The Owls completed the week by winning nine consecutive sets and nine out of 10 overall. The sweep was already their ninth of the season.
Rice never trailed thru the first two sets, hitting .387 and .500 in back-to-back games. The Owls took the first game, 25-13, after jumping out to a quick 8-1 lead and never looking back. Defensively Rice held Charlotte to just .061 for the set.
The Owls then took a demanding 2-0 lead by winning the second set, 25-11, this time limiting the Niners to a -.031 hitting percentage. In the third and final set Rice had to rally to complete the sweep after trailing for the first time on the afternoon. Charlotte pushed their lead to 12-9 but the Owls outscored them the rest of the way, 16-9.
The Owls will now embark on a three-game road trip that will send them to Middle Tennessee, UTEP and UTSA. Rice will first take on the Blue Raiders on Friday, Oct. 10 at 6 p.m. (CT).
