BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Rice Owls volleyball team punched their ticket to the C-USA Tournament with a resounding 3-0 (25-22, 25-21, 25-23) win over the UAB Blazers Friday evening at Bartow Arena.
Rice (10-18, 6-7) had four players finish with nine kills apiece and three Owls reach double-figures in digs, including a team-high 19 from Daniela Arenas. Freshman setter Sara Blasier led all players with 37 assists.
The Owls rallied to win the first set after they trailed from a 10-10 tie all the way until they took a 23-22 advantage. Rice had a match-best .326 hitting percentage the set that saw eight ties and seven lead changes.
Rice led from start to finish in set two while posting a match-best sideout percentage of 59 percent. In set three the Owls won another tightly contested set in which they won the final two points on a kill from Chelsey Harris and a Mariah Riddlesprigger block.
Rice assured themselves a spot in the C-USA Tournament, which will begin Nov. 21 in Murfreesboro, Tenn. and last through Nov. 24.
The Owls will close out the regular season this Sunday at 1 p.m. when they host Louisiana Tech on Senior Day. Rice will celebrate the careers of four seniors; Lindsay Daniel, Tyler Jenkins, Megan Murphy and Riddlesprigger.
