
LSU Beats Rice VB 3-1

Baton Rouge, La. -- The Rice Owls volleyball squad dropped a tough four-set match to No. 21 ranked LSU at the Tiger Classic inside the Pete Maravich Assembly Center. Set scores were 25-12, 25-21, 13-25, and 25-23. Rice is now 3-5 on the year and LSU remains perfect at 8-0. The Tigers gained a measure of revenge after getting beat 3-0 by Rice a year ago.
Rice freshman walk-on outside hitter Tyler Jenkins, from nearby Deer Park, Texas, made her collegiate debut and led the Owl attack with a 11 kills and a .286 hitting percentage. Junior Jordan Meredith added 9 kills and a team-high .474 hitting percentage, while Justnya Brewczyk pounded a career-high 7 kills. Owl seter Meredith Schamun tallied 28 assists, while Tracey Lam and Megan White had 13 and 11 digs respectively.
The Owls had no answer for LSU's Michele Williams as she smacked 20 kills for a match-high .533 hitting percentage (20-4-30). Angela Bensend also had 11 kills. Brittney Johnson directed the Tiger attack with 32 assists. Lauren Waclawczyk had a match-high 20 digs.
LSU outhit Rice 50 kills to 44 and .163 to .128. Rice concludes the Tiger Classic when it faces North Carolina at 5:30 p.m. Saturday evening.
