LAS VEGAS, Nev. - On the heals of a 65-55 home-court victory over UALR to begin the 2010 Las Vegas Holiday Hoops Classic, Rice resumes play at the Multi-Team Event Tuesday afternoon when the Owls take on Stetson. The game is the first of three in as many days for the Owls who also play Miami and Oral Roberts.
Tip-off for Tuesday's game is 2 p.m. Central/12 p.m. Pacific and will be broadcast locally in Houston by ESPN 97.5 as well as through RiceOwls.com. Rice will play Miami Wednesday at 2 p.m. Central and close out the tournament on Thursday with a game against Oral Roberts which has a 4:15 p.m. Central tip time.
The NCAA added legislation for Multi-Team Events back in 2006. The MTE format allows teams to play four games as part of a tournament which counts as only one game against a team's season schedule. Prior to traveling to Las Vegas, Arsalan Kazemi scored 15 points while Tamir Jackson equaled a career high with eight assists to go along with 12 points in the Owls' win over UALR to begin play in the tournament.
Stetson's campus-site game of the tournament was played on the road at Miami. The Hurricanes' bench scored 32 points, including a team-high 13 by Adrian Thomas, en route to a 68-54 victory.
Stetson's Ridge Graham scored a game-high 14 points and had seven rebounds in the loss at Miami. The loss was the first of two straight for the Hatters who are coming off a 97-63 setback at Florida State.
Graham averages a team-leading 15.9 points and 7.4 rebounds for Stetson while Tyshawn Patterson comes off the bench to average 10.2 points.
Graham was the lone sophomore in a starting lineup which featured four freshmen at Florida State. Rookie guard Corey Walden averages 9.8 points and 2.8 rebounds for the Hatters.
Stetson, 3-6, began the year with an 89-79 road win at Wake Forest.
Rice has now won its last two games to improve to 5-4.
Kazemi leads the Owls with a 15.7 points per game scoring average and ranks 18th nationally in rebounding, beginning the week with a 10.6 average.
Jackson is averaging 12.8 points per game and now has 25 assists for the year. Connor Frizzelle is averaging 9.3 points per game and heads into Tuesday's game with Stetson having converted 91.7 percent of his free throws including his last 20 at the line.
The balance of Tuesday's games of the 2010 Las Vegas Holiday Hoops Classic has Miami playing Oral Roberts while Akron takes on UALR. The tournament is being held at the 4,000-seat South Point Arena located south of The Strip.
