MIAMI, Fla. - The Rice duo of Shelby Bottoms and Chelsea Fong both won two individual events and swam on winning relays to pace the Owl swimmers to a 169-111 dual meet victory over Florida International University Friday afternoon in Miami, Fla.
Rice won 10 of the meet's 14 swim events, including both relays, to begin a weekend of meets and winter training in south Florida. Bottoms won the 100-yard breaststroke with a mark of 1:05.83 in her first time to compete in the event this season. The junior standout from nearby Lamar High School also led a 1-2-3 Rice finish with Nicole Delaloye and Carter Graves in the 200-backstroke with a winning time of 2:07.95.
Freshman Chelsea Fong had similar success in winning her first 500-freestyle at the collegiate level (5:05.93), and also leading a 1-2-3 Owl finish in the 200-individual medley (2:08.31) with Stephanie Wei and Alison Godbe, respectively. Wei (57.97) and Fong (1:00.74) traded spots in their respective 1-2 finish in the 100-backstroke. Rice also claimed first and second place in the 50-yard freestyle behind some solid swims from sprinters Kim Steinhouse (24.61) and Lilly Marrow (24.93).
Nicole Delaloye swam a season-best 1:56.22 to win the 200-freestyle. The rugged 1,000-free came down to the final few strokes as Owl sophomore Danielle Spence posted a season-best 10:36.93 to win the race by just eight-tenths of second (10:37.73). Rice's relays took both of the top two spots in the 400-medley. The Blue & Gray also closed out the meet with a victory in the 400-freestyle relay (3:34.43).
The Rice swimmers next compete at Florida Atlantic University on Saturday (Dec. 18) in Boca Raton. The two Owls (Rice and FAU) will be joined in the multi-team meet by the Air Force Academy, the University of Cincinnati and the University of Denver.
