Rice, which improved to 3-1, shot just 34 percent in the first half but finished the period with a 8-2 run after the Cavaliers had pulled to within a point, 29-28 on a Fayzon Richey three-pointer.
Richey, a 6-3 sophomore guard finished with a game-high 26 points and kept the Cavaliers in the game for much of the second period.
Through the opening minutes of the half, Rice built a 10-point lead but a four-point play by Richey with 12:09 remaining cut the lead back to six, 51-45. After a dunk by Rice's Suleiman Braimoh, Tony Walker answered with another trey for the Cavaliers and the Owls' lead was cut to five.
SGU made 7-of-19 three-point attempts including a 4-for-11 performance behind the arc by Richey who also had 10 rebounds, two assists and a steal while playing all 40 minutes. Dylan Lemley also played the entire game for the Cavaliers who dressed nine and had seven student-athletes play. Lemley finished with 14 points and six rebounds.
Lemley's three-pointer at the 10:03 mark cut the Rice lead to 55-51 but that was as close as the Cavaliers would get.
Rice freshman point guard Trevan Abraham drove for a layup and after a SGU turnover, Cory Pflieger fed Kazemi for a basket in which he was fouled inside. Kazemi knocked down the ensuing free throw and Pflieger later added two more at the line as the Owls built back an 11-point advantage, 62-51.
Abraham's basket triggered a strong finish by the Owls who outscored Saint Gregory's 20-7 over the final 10 minutes of the game.
No Owl played more than 25 minutes in the game.
Rice sophomore guard Tamir Jackson finished with 14 points. He was 6-for-10 from the field. Trey Stanton had eight points and nine rebounds. In addition to his 19 points, Kazemi had eight boards, three assists and three steals.
Rice plays at North Texas Tuesday night then takes on Texas Saturday afternoon in Austin. The Owls' next home game is Dec. 1 when they play host to Arizona.
