
Rice Beats UCF 3-1 in Volleyball

Orlando - The Rice Owls volleyball team improved its record to 4-1 in Conference USA with a convincing 3-1 victory on the road at UCF in front of 417 fans inside the The Venue at UCF. The Owls are now 9-8 overall, while the Knights fall to 7-9 on the year and remain winless in four matches in league action.
A trio of Owls led the Rice attack with double-digit kills. Junior outside hitter Ashleigh McCord, from Wylie, Texas, pounded 16 kills and hit .324 (16-4-37), while sophomore middle blocker Nancy Cole had a match-high .462 hitting percentage with 14 kills, and junior outside hitter Jordan Meredith connected on 10 kills to go with 14 digs for her second double-double of the season.
Also, Laurie McNamara had 9 kills and a .450 hitting percentage and freshman Megan Shepard had 8 kills and 6 blocks. Senior setter Meredith Schamun directed the Owl offense as it tallied 61 kills with a .288 attack percentage. Schamun finished with a match-high 45 assists. Libéro Tracey Lam dug up a match-high 27 digs and served three aces as well.
Schamun tallied 102 assists in the Owls' two matches this weekend for an outstanding 12.75 assist per set average. She now has 4,626 a Rice record 4,626 assists. Lam, with 55 digs in two matches (eight sets) this weekend averaged a remarkable 6.88 digs per set.
The Knights could only manage 47 kills and a .185 hitting percentage. Kristin Fisher led UCF with 16 kills and Angelica Crump contributed 13.
The Owls host Tulane for two matches next weekend. The first match takes place on Friday, Oct. 8 at 7 p.m. and match two is on Saturday, Oct. 9, also at 7 p.m. inside Tudor Fieldhouse. The Green Wave comes to Houston with a 4-12 overall mark and a 1-3 league record after losing 3-0 at Tulsa (13-2, 4-0) on Sunday (25-20, 25-9, and 25-20).
