
Rice Beats UTEP 3-1 in Volleyball

El Paso, Texas -- Ashleigh McCord pounded a match-high 16 kills and posted a match-high .714 hitting percentage in leading the Rice Owls volleyball team to a 3-1 victory over UTEP in a Conference USA tussle in Memorial Gym. The win gives Rice an 18-8 overall record and a 10-5 slate in C-USA, while the Miners are now 11-17 and 4-11 in league action.
Set scores were 25-20, 25-18, 25-22, 25-17. The Owls have now won four matches in a row and this was their seven consecutive win over UTEP.
Besides McCord, also wrecking havoc were Natalie Bogan with 14 kills and a .333 hitting percentage and freshman Nancy Cole with 12 kills and a .364 hitting percentage. As a team the Owls hit .261 with 57 kills.
Setter Meredith Schamun directed the Owls' attack with 41 assists and 2 service aces. Rice was strong defensively as well as Bogan, Cole, and McCord each collected 4 block assists and Jenn McClean had 11 digs and Tracey Lam had a team-high 13 digs. McClean also had 8 kills to her credit.
McCord, in two matches this past weekend, hit a remarkable .610 with 27 kills for a 3.86 kills per set average.
UTEP posted 53 kills and a .221 attack percentage and was led by Aidan Mooney's 12 kills. Catherine Chavez and Amy Sanders had 10 kills apiece.
Rice will honor its four seniors when it hosts Houston on Thursday, November 12 at 7 p.m. inside Tudor Fieldhouse.
Starting Nov. 20, Rice will serve as host to the 2009 Conference USA Volleyball Championship. The three-day event will be hosted inside Tudor Fieldhouse and will feature the league's top eight teams. An All-Session pass, which includes seven matches, is $15 for adults and $10 for youth. Single session ticket prices are $8 for adults and $4 for youth and groups.
