Rice University senior guard Cory Pflieger will undergo surgery next week for a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and will miss the 2009-10 season.
"This is obviously a tough setback for Cory as well as our team," said Rice coach Ben Braun. "Cory had a great summer and preseason. He was certainly looking forward to his senior year. We're all hoping for a healthy recovery."
Pflieger, who received a medical red-shirt for the 2007-08 season, will have the option to appeal to the NCAA for a sixth year of eligibility.
The Dickson, Tenn., native played in all 32 games as a junior, starting 18. He averaged 8.2 points and 3.5 rebounds during the season. He also had 69 assists and 20 steals.
During his three-plus year career, Pflieger has seen action in 91 games and has scored 574 points. He ranks 10th on the Rice three-point shooting chart, having made 130 treys during his career.
