Tulsa Beats Rice 3-0 in Volleyball

Houston - Jennifer Eichler had a match-high 19 kills to surge the Tulsa Golden Hurricane past the Rice Owls 3-0 in a Conference USA volleyball match in Tudor Fieldhouse. Set scores were 21-25, 17-25, 17-25. With the win, TU moves to 13-5 overall and 3-2 in C-USA, while the Owls drop to 12-5 and 4-2 in league action.
The Owls only had one player in double-digit kills as Ashleigh McCord had 14.
Besides Eichler, TU's Tyler Henderson, a freshman, had 13 kills. Eichler, a left-handed outside hitter, finished the night with a match-high .375 hitting percentage (19-4-40)
Tulsa jumped out early in set with a 5-1 lead that it would not relinquish. The Owls did fight back to within one at 14-13, but TU responded to score 6 of the next 9 points for a 20-16 lead. The Golden Hurricane then closed out the set with a kill by Tyler Henderson for a 25-21.
TU's Jennifer Eichler led both teams with 6 kills. Natalie Bogan led Rice with 5 kills. Tulsa hit .317 with 17 kills (4 errors) in 41 attacks, while Rice hit .257 with 15 kills (6 errors) in 35 attempts. The Owls' setter, Meredith Schamun posted 13 assists.
In set two, Rice held a 14-7 lead before Tulsa countered with an improbable runs of 10-3 run and 8-0 and then closed out the set to win 25-17. The Owls hit .023 with 10 kills, while Tulsa had 13 kills and a .216 hitting percentage. TU's Eichler and Rice's McCord each had 5 kills.
The Golden Hurricane took control early of set three with a 9-5 lead and did not let en route to a 25-17 win. The Owls brought it back to be down only five at 20-15, but TU did not falter.
McCord and Jenn McClean had 4 kills for the Owls in set three, while Eichler once again led all attackers with 6 kills. TU in set three pounded 19 kills for a .395 hitting percentage, while Rice hit .205 with 11 kills.
The Owls now host SMU on Saturday at 7 p.m. inside Tudor Fieldhouse.
