
Rice Beats Marshall 3-0 in Volleyball

Houston - Rice celebrated Halloween Night with a 3-0 sweep of the visiting Marshall Thundering Herd in a Conference USA volleyball match played in Tudor Fieldhouse. The Owls improve to 16-8 overall and 8-5 in C-USA play, while Marshall drops to 19-7 and 7-5 in conference action.
Set scores were 32-30, 25-16, and 25-19.
Three Owls were in double digits in kills. Senior Jessie "Boo"lavsky led all hitters with 13 kills. Natalie "Body Bag" Bogan had 11 kills and Jenn "Chainsaw" McClean had 10 kills and 12 digs. Boulavsky also hit a match-high .500. Nancy Cole "Blooded" had 7 kills and zero errors for a .500 attack percentage.
"Scary" Meredith Schamun posted a match-high 37 assists, while Tracey "Silence of the" Lam had a match-high 19 digs for Rice. Megan White "As A Ghost" had six digs and one assist. Ashleigh "Morbid" McCord had 3 kills, 2 digs, and a block assist. Channing "Ghouls"by posted 7 digs, while Caroline "Bone Chilling" Gill had 1 kill.
Marshall was led by Emily Sullivan's 12 kills.
Set one was tightly contested with the biggest lead by either was three points. The Owls were up 23-22, before Marshall came back to take a 24-23 lead. The two teams traded points until Rice's Jessie Boulavsky pounded a kill and a Marshall hitting error gave the Owls a 32-30 win.
Marshall carded 22 kills in the first set and hit .235, while Rice had 17 kills and a .224 hitting percentage. The Owls' Boulavsky had 7 kills and Marshall's Elizabeth Herman had 7 kills as well.
The Owls outscored the Thundering Herd 10 to five to take a 21-12 lead in set two before winning 25-16. In set two, the Owls hit 17 kills with a .359 attack percentage, while the Herd managed 10 kills and a .091 hitting percentage. Rice's Natalie Bogan led all hitters with 5 kills, while Jenn McClean and Nancy Cole had 4 kills each. After 15 assists in the first set, the Owls' Meredith Schamun came back and posted 14 assists in the second set.
Rice jumped out to an 11 to 3 lead in set three en route to a 25-19 win. Bogan and Boulavsky led the Owls with 3 kills as Rice hit .302 with 15 kills. Marshall also had 15 kills and hit .268. Kristin Marcum led Marshall with 6 kills in the third set.
Rice is on the road next weekend. The Owls play at Tulane on Nov. 6 at 7 p.m. and at UTEP on Nov. 8 at 2 p.m. (CST).
