HOUSTON - Tony Davis sparked a 14-0 UCF run with a pair of three-pointers from above the key and finished with a 17-point, 12-rebound double-double as the Knights defeated Rice 77-52 in Tudor Fieldhouse Saturday.
UCF won its first Conference USA game to improve to 11-6 and 1-2. Rice is now 6-11 and 1-2.
Rice and UCF were tied 30-30 at halftime in a game which featured 11 ties and six lead changes.
The Knights would rally after a four-point play by Cory Pflieger gave the Owls a 39-38 lead at the 17:16 mark. Pflieger was fouled by Taylor Young while knocking down a three-pointer. He would make the ensuing free throw to give the Owls their last lead of the game.
UCF would score the next two baskets before Rice's Lawrence Ghoram nailed a three-pointer. But at the other end Davis answered Ghoram's trey with a three-pointer of his own then pulled up for another triple the Knights' next time down the floor.
Jermaine Taylor would later connect on a three-pointer and after a Davis steal, he would pull up for a jumper. After another Rice missed shot, Taylor drilled one more three and the UCF lead was 56-42 with 10:29 to play.
Taylor led UCF with 20 points and also had four rebounds and three assists.
Connor Frizzelle led Rice with 14 points. He made his first four field goals of the game but went 0-for-4 in the second half.
The Owls shot just 19 percent from the field in the second period and did not make a field goal in the final four-plus minutes of play. UCF shot 61 percent from the field in the second half, including 5-of-6 three-point attempts.
Rice begins a two-game Mid-South road swing Wednesday when the Owls take on Memphis before traveling to UAB on Saturday. UCF returns home to start a three-game home stand next Wednesday against Southern Miss.
