
Owls Cruise Past Roadrunners 3-1

In the first of two matches on Friday, the Rice volleyball team handily dispatched UT-San Antonio 3-1 (25-15, 25-17, 21-25, and 25-16) at the Baylor Classic in Waco, Texas. The Owls previously defeated UTSA last weekend at the Mizuno Invitational 3-0.
Rice is now 4-1, while UTSA falls to 1-3.
Rice had one of its better matches in terms of blocks with 10.
"Blocking was one of our points of focus this match and we are steadily improving in that area," said Rice head coach Genny Volpe.
The Owls placed four in double-figures for kills with senior Jessica Holderness leading the way with 14 and a sterling .464 attack percentage (14-1-28).
"I really feel that Jessica played a just a great match this morning," commented Volpe.
Natalie Bogan posted 10 kills and Karyn Morgan and Ashleigh McCord tallied 10 apiece. Holderness added 12 digs and Morgan 11.
Setter Meredith Schamun had 48 assists and 17 digs, while libero Tracey Lam had a match-high 20 digs.
"Meredith Schamun did a great job of running the offense and implementing everyone in the offense," commented Volpe.
The Roadrunners' Kelly Rowland had a match-high 16 kills.
Rice's next match in the Baylor Classic is vs. Weber State at 5 p.m. Friday evening.
